CHAPTER SIX

Emily kept her hands over her ears as she explained, in as calm of a tone as possible, “Yes, Eternal Rest is haunted. We have Mrs. Thompson, the ghost of my former assistant—you heard her knocking yesterday—plus an old woman we call Grandma Gray, and—”

“I’m being haunted by a ghost, and you want to introduce them to me?” Madison shouted.

I knew I was right to keep my ears covered. “Let me guess, you heard knocking again? Or did Mrs. Thompson move your luggage into the closet? She likes to help out.”

“This,” Madison said through clenched teeth, “is not a ghost trying to help out.”

“Oh.” Emily was surprised, though she reminded herself that Madison seemed to turn every little thing into an excuse to make a scene, so what would seem like perfectly normal ghostly behavior to Emily might elicit hysterics from Madison. “Why don’t you tell me what happened?”

“It’s easier to show you.” Madison turned and led the way up the stairs. When she reached the top, Amara, Courtney, and Brittany crowded around her, putting gentle hands on her shoulders and asking if she was okay. Susan, Emily noticed, was standing a few feet away, her lips pursed and her eyebrows drawn together. To Emily, she looked like a storm cloud about to burst.

“Courtney,” Emily said gently, “could you please turn off the shower?” She could hear the sound of water coming from the room Courtney and Brittany were sharing, and since Courtney was the one wearing only a towel wrapped around herself, Emily knew she must have come flying out of the shower when she heard Madison’s screams.

Courtney gasped and dashed into the guest room while Emily returned her attention to Madison. “Let’s see what the ghost has been up to.”

As Madison led the way to her room, she grumbled under her breath. Most of it was too quiet to hear, except for a few very clear swear words. The fear she had felt seemed to be turning into anger, but Emily couldn’t tell if it was directed at her or at whichever ghost had frightened her in the first place.

Emily nearly said a few swear words herself the moment she saw Madison’s room. Madison had moved to the side as soon as she walked through the doorway, giving Emily a clear view of the room. Emily took one step inside, then stopped and stared.

It looked like someone had thrown a wild party. There were three cans of diet soda on the floor, their contents dripping from the surface of the dresser. Even the mirror had been sprayed with soda, as if someone had shaken each can, then opened them so their contents exploded out. A nearby painting had brown liquid oozing down it, as well.

On the bed, a bag of cheese puffs had been ripped open, and a layer of bright-orange dust covered the white bedspread. A croissant had been shredded to crumbs on the nightstand.

My ghosts didn’t do this, Emily thought. That was quickly followed by something that seemed of almost equal importance.
